clapclapclapclapclapclap… songs with handclapping!
February 28th, 2012
Music was one of the most important parts of mine and Kristie’s wedding day. We spent many hours pouring over our favourite music searching for the the perfect songs to create the most danceable playlists. One of the last songs we added was ‘The Clapping Song’ by Shirley Ellis. We figured, who doesn’t like handclaps? The answer to that is… nobody! Sorry, that’s kinda double negative-y, but you get the point. People danced! I mean, sweaty, crazy hand clappy, head shakey dancing. It was awesome.
Every artist should have at least one song that includes handclaps. Statement.
Proofs.
Florence + The Machine ‘Dog Days are Over’*
*do you know how I know I’m old? Just yesterday, I said “Hey this is a pretty good song, who is this?”
The album ‘Lungs’ by Florence + the Machine was released in the UK in 2009. Songs from the album were featured on shows like Community and Gossip Girl, as well as Jennifer’s Body starring Megan Fox. I like to keep things current.
Noah and the Whale ’5 years time’
It’s a little twee, but hey aren’t we all?
Patrick Wolf ‘The Magic Position’
Keeping up the twee.
The Cure ‘Close to Me’
This is the last one like this. I promise I will move back to something a bit more classic. However, Belle and Sebastian may make an appearance later on down the line.
K-OS ‘Crabbuckit’
The Cure segues nicely into this. I swear I thought this was a Love Cats cover when I first heard it.
Outkast ‘Rosa Parks’
The real handclappin’ doesn’t start until about 2:48, but hoooo boy when it does…
Rose Royce ‘Car Wash’
From Rosa Parks to Rose Royce, that ladies and gentlemen is what you call a segue.
Archie Bell ‘Tighten Up’
This guy made nothing but the best dance songs.
The Gorillaz ‘Dirty Harry’
Maaan, did I get sick of this album, but since that would be The Gem’s(bar I used to work in) fault and not the band’s, here you go.
Pelle Carlberg ‘Clever Girls Like Clever Boys Much More Than Clever Boys Like Clever Girls’
That took a really long time to type.
Belle and Sebastian ‘The Boy With The Arab Strap’
The boy with the arab strap likes the girl with the arab strap more than the girl with the arab strap likes the boy with the arab strap.
Simon and Garfunkel ‘Cecelia’
I’m realizing more and more, I like way too many Paul Simon songs.
Gary Glitter ‘I’m the Leader of the Gang’
I was going to end on this one and then I felt bad for making Gary Glitter’s face the last thing you saw in this post, so I put a cute kitty video right afterwards. Your welcome. Also if you have any clapping song suggestions please leave them in the comments.
Picking the perfect song(s).

So Kristie and I got iPhones. Yippety skip.
Don’t get me wrong I’m a Mac user and I enjoy my ipod and what not, it’s just really humbling and kinda depressing standing around at the Rogers store and having a 17 year old teach me how to use my phone. I should note, we’re not technophobes, we use a variety of hardware and software every day as part of our jobs, it’s just… I think I might be an old person now. When my new phone rang for the first time, I didn’t answer it. I was afraid. The second time it rang, I answered it but I couldn’t hear anything so I had to have my entire conversation with my Mother on speakerphone. I resolved the problem by googling my stupidity and then removing the thin piece of plastic that was covering the front of the phone. So there’s that. Also, I tend to drop the controller for the television every single time I pick it up, so at the moment I am handling my phone as though it were the Rothschild Faberge Egg.
The point of this is to tell you all about this handy new App we discovered while searching around for things for our phone to do besides talk to people who are not standing in front of us.This App was created by Appstract Art with assistance from Toronto’s very own Indie Wedding DJ. We had the pleasure of working with him at Kathryn and Brendan’s wedding this past summer, and can vouch for his ability to keep the dance floor full and moving. This is him describing how the App works.
This would have come in very handy when we planning our wedding let us know what you think.
